The first Eduglocal course trial was held on the island of Lesvos at the end of September. It was a great success, with educators from four countries working together to explore the project’s themes of Food, Climate Change, Migration, Citizenship and Health.
It was a particularly interesting time to be on Lesvos as it is the point of entry for over half of all migrants coming into Europe as part of the largest migration since the Second World War. The Migration theme was introduced in the Experimental Lyceum of Mytilene. Then, participants took the opportunity to speak with migrants from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. They brought donations of medical items and clothes for local charity organisations to distribute. Some also volunteered at the Social Kitchen “The Other Human” to provide meals to the refugees.
The Centre for Environmental Education in Asomatos introduced how they work with local schools to highlight the importance of bees to the environment.
The Food and Health themes were explored through visiting The Museum of Industrial Olive-Oil Production and preparing Greek food at a local restaurant. This was also streamed live to the internet!
The group had the opportunity to visit The Natural History Museum of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos. As well as learning about the amazing petrified forest and volcanic landscape they also experienced an earthquake measuring 9 on the Richter Scale on the museum’s earthquake simulator! The museum uses this to teach children how they should react when the island has an earthquake.
The participants worked together in groups to research and write a new EduglocalQuest based on the project’s themes. They also produced diaries of the week’s activities.
